What is SCRIP?

Scrip is a paper certificate or card such as gift cards/certificates that most retail stores, grocery stores, bookstores, gas stations, restaurants and other merchants accept for trade.  Therefore, instead of making purchases by cash, check, or credit card, purchases are made by scrip.

At school, we purchase scrip at discount price and sell to the parents or the school supporters at face value.  The difference of this transaction translates into instant profit for the school.  Using scrip as part of a daily shopping routine, secures on the average 5% donation from participating merchants.  With the support of the parents, this program yields tangible financial return for the school.

Ferrahian Scrip Program

Ferrahian School implemented the scrip program school-wide several years ago, requiring the participation of all the parents.  This program allows the parents to support the school financially without spending more than already done on everyday purchases.  As described in the “Financial Responsibility Agreement” of the student enrollment packet, parents are expected to participate in this program by purchasing $3000 worth of scrip during an academic year.

Parents have another option if they choose not to participate in the scrip program.  They can make a $200 tax-deductible contribution at the beginning of the school year instead of participating in the program.

For billing purposes, a family is charged $200 during the first quarter of the school year for settlement by the end of the second quarter. Throughout the year, the school credits parents for scrip purchased.  Scrip purchases that exceed $3,000, the minimum required per year, will be credited toward the next school year scrip purchases.

The Scrip Order Form lists the names of businesses that honor trade through scrip.  This form must be used to place orders.  The school offices at both Encino and North Hills Campuses stock scrip from these merchants and are available for purchase.
