The students of Holy Martyrs Ferrahian High School made a large impact at Bruin Model United Nations which was held at the University of California, Los Angeles on the weekend of November 8th, 2014. Mimicking the ideals of the United Nations, Model United Nations conferences are hosted several times a year at a number of locations throughout the country and give hundreds of students the chance to debate, express their political voice, and propose solutions to problems relating to the global economy, poverty, warfare, and human rights that plague our world. Khachik Avagyan, a senior at Ferrahian High School was awarded the gavel in honor of the outstanding diplomatic ambition he showed while representing the delegation of Germany in the European Union at Bruin Model United Nations. The gavel represents the highest honor in conferences, and is the award given to the delegate who performed outstanding overall involvement in their respective committee. Eight research awards were also presented to Ferrahian students for astounding research and writing skills. Van Der-Megredichian (12th), Mno Bogosyan (12th) , Alexia Faelbachian (9th), Sarine Kazandjian (9th), Vahan Hovannisian (8th) , Jack Nalbandian (8th), Aleen Kuyumjian (8th), and Sophine Kevorkian (8th). Each and every student who attended this conference gained skills in public speaking and diplomacy, and those students that did not win an award promised to return with greater ambition next year. Many Ferrahian Alumni who now attend UCLA play a major role in running the Model United Nations Conference by serving as part of the Secretariat, (the body that organizes the conference year after year). Students from eighth grade all the way to the senior class take part in Ferrahian High School’s biggest extracurricular activity and the numbers keep growing.
